Thai Sour Curry Paste

FEATURED IN THE DAILY MAIL

“The Thai curry pastes from Mae Jum are some of the best I’ve tasted, full of spice, heat and Siamese succour.”

— Tom Parker Bowles, Food Critic

Why does it taste so authentic...

I was born and raised in Thailand, where there was an abundance of herbs, spices, fruits and vegetables growing around my family home. It wasn't in a garden or vegetable plot, it was just here, there and everywhere! From a young age, I was often the one asked to blend the herbs and spices in a stone pestle and mortar, until my arm was about to fall off. I didn't enjoy it, but in hindsight, it taught me all I know..

Today, my family's traditional blend of newly harvested herbs are stone ground to make a fresh paste, which is combined with a mix of whole spices that have been pan roasted to extract the natural oils before being finely ground.

We do not add any sugar, oil, shrimp paste or any artificial preservatives, additives or coloring to our fresh blend which is then mildly pasteurized to retain the natural qualities and goodness so you can enjoy that distinctive aroma of fresh herbs and spices when you open the packet.

Hot hot hot

I bought this in a bundle so I hadn’t seen the 5/5 heat rating I just love tamarind and the idea of sour curry. Perhaps a bit more of a warning in the packet could have helped me here. We used the recipe on the packet. With green papaya and bamboo. It taste good but I was physically laughing and crying eating it. I love a spicy curry but I had to quit..I would try again but perhaps with less paste and more palm sugar.

Absolutely delicious!

As other reviews have said, this is HOT! If you don't like exceptionally hot curries then avoid .....but is you like tamarind & serious hot then this is for you. We both absolutely loved it.
We're both vegan so made with veg and tofu and only added coconut milk, some brown sugar and juice from a lime. One of our favourite curries ever!

Hi Kacey! One of your favourite curries ever, that is honestly everything! Thank you so much! 😊

Your vegan version sounds absolutely wonderful, veg, tofu, coconut milk, brown sugar and a squeeze of lime is such a beautiful combination with the Sour Curry. We may have to steal that recipe!

And yes, it is definitely a bold one, so thank you for the honest heads up for fellow shoppers too. Happy cooking to you both!

BEYOND sour!

This is the only flavour I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed. It does what it says on the packet: it’s SOUR. But beyond sour. And here’s a warning to all: if you can’t handle extremely hot foods, don’t even attempt to eat the sour paste. It will blow your mouth off.

Hi Renee, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I’m sorry our sour curry wasn’t to your taste. Although the sourness and heat is intense, it does reflect true southern Thai cuisine but we understand that sour curry might not be everyone’s favourite. Thank you for giving it a try, all the best, Jum 🙏

Delicious, but not for the faint hearted

Take heed of the 5/5 spice warning as this paste pulls no punches. Thankfully I enjoy my heat and this soup was a joy to eat. The tang of the tamarind perfectly complemented rich salmon. I'd love to make this again when I can get my hands on some unripe papaya (I used bean sprouts this time around).
